When a lifting cable snaps, it releases the door’s connection to the spring system on one side. The door drops on that side and the rollers on the affected side jump out of the track. This happens suddenly and often with a loud bang similar to a spring breaking.

Worn or broken rollers (particularly common in older Seattle homes where nylon rollers have degraded or where steel rollers have developed flat spots) can pop out of the track during operation. 1. Safety assessment: We determine whether the door can be safely re-tracked or whether panel damage or track deformation requires additional work first.
2. Tension release: If there is residual spring tension contributing to the door’s position, we release it safely before proceeding.
3. Roller reinsertion: Each derailed roller is carefully reinserted into the track at the correct position.
4. Track inspection and correction: If the track caused the derailment, we identify the damage. Bent sections are straightened or replaced, Misaligned brackets are adjusted and tightened.
5. Cable inspection: If a snapped cable caused the derailment, the cable is replaced (both cables simultaneously. See our spring policy for the same reason).
6. Full travel test: Door travels the complete open/close cycle smoothly without hesitation or rubbing.

If the door is in the closed position, it is reasonably safe for security overnight, but do not operate it. If the door is off-track in the open position, your garage is unsecured.
